Summary: Political scientist and journalist Ross Terrill, who traveled extensively in China from the 1960s, died on Aug. 2 at his home in Boston. He was 85. Terrill, an Australian native, made his first trip to China in 1964, a few years after graduating from the University of Melbourne, as the country was on the brink of the Cultural Revolution. Seven years later, he returned, one of the first Westerners allowed back into the country after the fervor of the revolution subsided. He wrote a two-part travelogue for The Atlantic Monthly, whose readers — including President Nixon, who was preparing for his historic visit to China in 1972 — were eager for insight into Beijing. Terrill received a doctorate in political science from Harvard, where he worked for the rest of his career, primarily as a fellow at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies. His work, especially what he published for a general audience, bridged the gap between journalism and academia. Many of his books, such as “The Real China” (1972) and “Flowers on an Iron Tree: Five Cities of China” (1975), combined travel writing, history and political analysis in a captivating way that appealed to Sinologists and the general public alike.
