Summary: According to data compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward), the volume of sea container shipments from Asia to Europe in the first half of 2024 (January-June) increased by 7% year-on-year to 8,746,764 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), setting a new record high for the first half of the year. Due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, many container shipping companies have canceled sailings through the Red Sea and Suez Canal, key routes connecting Asia and Europe, since December 2023. This has resulted in longer transit times and disrupted schedules, prompting shippers to secure larger inventories, pushing up shipping volumes.

From a loading area perspective, Greater China (mainland China and Hong Kong combined), which accounts for nearly 80% of the shipping volume, saw a 10% year-on-year increase in shipments, reaching 6,744,362 TEU. Southeast Asia saw a 1% year-on-year increase to 1,141,032 TEU, while Northeast Asia, including Japan, saw a decrease of 8% to 861,361 TEU.

As a reference, the Japan Maritime Center has compiled statistics on imports from China to the 27 countries of the European Union (EU). Cumulative data for January-May shows that imports of machinery, furniture and bedding, steel products, and others exceeded those of the previous year.

In June, sea container shipments from Asia to Europe increased by 8% year-on-year, reaching 1,591,017 TEU. This marks a year-on-year increase for the 16th consecutive month. Shipments from Greater China increased by 11%.
